The Europa Nostra Prize 2019 for the restoration of the Chapel of the Shroud by Guarini

Just over a year after its reopening, on Tuesday 29 October 2019 in Paris, the extraordinary restoration of the Chapel of the Shroud, an architectural jewel by Guarino Guarini, was celebrated with the award of the prestigious European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Prize 2019 in the Conservation category. The European Heritage Awards ceremony was held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in the presence of the European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics under the high patronage of the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.
The award for the Royal Museums of Turin, of which the Chapel is an integral part, was received by the Director Enrica Pagella and the Director of restoration work Marina Feroggio.

The award is organised by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, the main network for cultural heritage which every year celebrates and promotes excellence in the field of artistic heritage.

During the award ceremony, the winner of the Public Choice Award category, in which the Chapel of the Shroud was included, was also unveiled. During the voting days, the winner received a great deal of support from the Italian public, manifested in particular through social media and the web.

The restoration works of the baroque monument of Guarini have been defined by many as a “winning bet” for the complexity and difficulty of the restoration, which has seen three different sites alternating over twenty years. Today the Chapel of the Shroud is one of the most visited baroque jewels appreciated by visitors who do not fail to stop and admire the masterpiece found.
