Great celebration of the Historical Sails. In Versilia is celebrated the 15th gathering of vintage boats

Great expectations for the fifteenth edition of what in just three decades has become the most important and participated rally-race that concludes the season of vintage sails in the Mediterranean. From 17 to 20 October 2019 the Tuscan city of Viareggio will once again host a fleet of over 50 boats, which will compete in three days of racing. In addition to the category winners, after 80 years, the Coppa Tirrenia II will be reassigned, won by that boat that in the current year will have completed the most interesting navigation on the high seas, regardless of the miles covered. The event is the fifth and final round of the Artiglio Trophy reserved for historic boats.

From 17 to 20 October, the Viareggio Historic Sails and the Versilia Nautical Club will celebrate the important milestone of the 15th annual regatta in the Tuscan city. The event, organized in synergy between the two associations, will host the participants in the prestigious headquarters, its reception facilities and boats in the facing docks. There will be the arrival of more than 50 vintage and classic boats, three regattas (from Friday to Sunday), a big crew dinner on Saturday evening at the Del Carlo shipyard, an exhibition of scale models of vintage boats (each owner is invited to exhibit their own), the exhibition of watercolor painter Emanuela Tenti and photographer Marco Trainotti, visits to the restoration sites. At the meeting is expected to participate in some boats of the class 5.50 Meters S.I. (International Tonnage), which will compete on a regatta course reserved for them. This five-time former Olympic class, made up of 9.50-metre-long boats run by three crew members, celebrates 70 years since it was established in 2019. It is estimated that since 1949 around 800 hulls have been built around the world, now divided into the Classic, Evolution and Modern categories. The current president of the Italian class is the Roman Count Fabrizio Cavazza, owner of Volpina in 1960.

As in previous editions, the meeting is dedicated to a boat of the association and this year it is the turn of Tirrenia II of 1914, the 18.54 meters long English ketch aurico officially returned to sea last June 8 after a restoration lasted about 3 years made by the shipyard Del Carlo. It is also associated with a trophy, awarded annually until 1939, to the boat that had completed the longest cruise in the Mediterranean. After 80 years, the Cup will be reassigned to the boat that in the current year has made and documented the most interesting offshore navigation, enhancing the cruise aspect regardless of the miles travelled. For the purposes of the assignment, a special committee will examine the documentation produced by each boat regarding routes, stops and distances covered at sea in the period prior to the meeting Vele Storiche Viareggio.

Among the collateral initiatives organized on the occasion of the XV Vele Storiche Viareggio Meeting, there is also an exhibition dedicated to America, the iconic schooner that in 1851 gave its name to the oldest sports trophy in the world, the America’s Cup of sailing. The original hull, built by the William H. Brown shipyard in Manhattan, was destroyed in the early 1940s. Today, the replica of the world’s most famous gaff schooner, launched in the USA in 1967, is being restored in Viareggio. This faithful reproduction, about 40 meters long and made of Oregon pine and oak, will soon return to navigate evoking legendary pages in the history of this sport. On the occasion of the meeting will be exhibited the tender of America, also built in wood in 1967, which after completed work will return on board the schooner.
