The “Journey” is the theme of Horticultural 2019

Italy, Cernobbio (Como) – Fernando Pessoa, from the height of his depth, put it black on white: “Life is what we do with it. Travellers are travelers. What we see is not what we see, but what we are. And that’s exactly how it is, as we travel, we lose ourselves and find ourselves again, re-reading ourselves in the eyes of others. The “Journey”, the theme of Orticolario 2019, seduced the participants of the international competition “Creative Spaces” for the design and creation of gardens and art installations. Eight finalists, evaluated by the Selection Committee among numerous proposals sent by architects, designers, landscape architects, artists, gardeners and nurserymen. Eight finalists-travellers who literally crossed mental and territorial boundaries, coming from Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and – for the first time – the United States and Russia.

The selected ones will realize their project in the historical park of Villa Erba, in Cernobbio, on the occasion of Orticolario, scheduled from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th October 2019: as always, they will be original and innovative spaces, liveable and usable gardens, new ideas of garden and artistic installation able to define a different experience of relationship between man and nature.

The creations will be evaluated by an international jury that will award the best realization the prize-sculpture “La Foglia d’oro del Lago di Como”, a vase with sinuous shapes on which sways a large leaf with “hints” of pure gold (24K), designed and made by Gino Seguso of the historic Artistic Glassworks Archimede Seguso of Murano (VE). The prize will be kept by the winner for a limited period, to be subsequently exhibited at Villa Carlotta (Tremezzina, CO) until the next edition: the ceremony of redelivery of the 2018 prize, awarded to landscape architect Leonardo Magatti with the Spazio Green Passion “La Topitta”, will take place as usual at Villa Carlotta Friday, April 12 at 11.Important news, the winning project will be placed in the botanical garden of Villa Carlotta for the entire opening season, thus giving the opportunity to enjoy the many visitors.

“We are happy to welcome projects that come from far away, from the U.S. and Russia, we could not really want better for the edition dedicated to Travel – comments Anna Rapisarda, curator of Orticolario. – The projects selected transcend every space-time boundary, they ‘contaminate’ the usual interpretation of the garden. As in every edition, they will be spaces to live in, where you can travel with your imagination and space with your imagination.

In addition to “La Foglia d’oro del Lago di Como”, the jury will also award other prizes: Empathy” award for a space that tells, communicates and excites; “Art” award for a space where the balance between art and nature coexists, where different languages find an effective synthesis; “Great Italian Gardens” award for a space of lights and shapes that communicates tradition and innovation; “Villa d’Este” award where style and elegance blend into a timeless tradition; Villa Carlotta” award for the enhancement of art in the garden, where nature and human ingenuity coexist harmoniously; “Gardenia” award to the nursery, exhibitor or “memorable” installation of the edition of Orticolario; “Stampa” award for the innovation of materials and eco-sustainability; in addition to the “Visitatori” award for the garden or the artistic installation voted by the public.
