In Carbonia extraordinary openings of the Nuraghe Sirai

In April, six days in Carbonia to visit the Nuraghe Sirai. Discover the extraordinary Sardinian Phoenician fortress, the only site where you recognize the most recent phase of the Nuragic civilization, contemporary to the Phoenician one

Carbonia (Sardinia) Italy – Good news for all lovers of archaeology, history and culture. After the great success of visitors last October, the extraordinary openings of the Sardinian Phoenician fortress of Nuraghe Sirai are back in great demand in April.  Every Sunday in April (7-14-21-28), on Easter Monday (22 April) and the anniversary of the Liberation of Italy (25 April) will be active guided tours at fixed hours by the Cooperative Museum System, current manager of the Museum System of Carbonia. The initiative “Sundays at the Nuraghe” will offer visitors the opportunity to access the excavations conducted so far and also those under construction.

The archaeological area is part of the Archaeological Park of Monte Sirai-Nuraghe Sirai and the Museum System of Carbonia (SiMuC). The excavation is a rare case of a research concession entrusted to a municipality (Carbonia) through the Archaeological Museum (scientific direction of Carla Perra). It is therefore part of a complete chain of cultural heritage ranging from excavation investigations, restoration, exhibition and dissemination. At present, and pending a definitive opening soon, the Nuraghe Sirai is a work and research site; the initiative of the Sundays at the Nuraghe, therefore, offers the exceptional opportunity to access the excavations conducted so far and also those underway. This is made possible thanks to the presence of a team of workers hired for a year by the Foundation Mining Way of Santa Barbara and thanks to the Cooperative Museum System, which, since the beginning of its management in November 2017, has undertaken a series of interventions to promote and enhance the knowledge and enjoyment of the important cultural circuit of the city of Carbonia.

The guided tour of the Nuraghe will include: the fortifications, the pedestrian door, the sacred area, the glass workshop, the leather processing area and the external curtains of the actual Nuraghe.

The visits will take place every hour, with four appointments over the six days on the calendar: 9.30 am, 11.30 am, 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm. The cost is 5 euros per person. Reservation is recommended.

The Nuraghe Sirai is the first scientifically excavated in the territory of Carbonia, but it is above all a unique settlement, and therefore deserves a visit and the attention that the scientific community has recognized, in at least two respects. The first aspect is the chronology: it is, in fact, the only site in which the most recent phase of the Nuragic civilization (750-550 BC approx.) is documented by a complete and visible (architecture, ceramic production, technology, etc..) of the material culture. The second aspect concerns the type of settlement: a fortress, the only one from this period (625-550 BC approx.), surrounded by embankments and strongly specialized in crafts and production (glass, metals, leather, ceramics), so as to suggest a sort of large “industrial area” fortified at the service of the district of Monte Sirai.

These two aspects form a unique and original historical phase, because it originated within a mixed community (composed of nuragics and Phoenicians) and well appreciated during the visit to the fortress of Nuraghe Sirai: from the eastern type fortifications to the sacred area built in continuity with the traditional architecture, to the new blocks where the Sardinian tradition evolves into innovative forms.

Finally, there are numerous technological aspects of great scientific importance to the fortress, which includes the large poly-lobed complex of the actual Nuraghe (dating back to the last phases of the Bronze Age), from the discovery of the oldest glassworks in Sardinia to the recent discovery of a system for channelling rainwater, which systematized the collection of water from the top of the settlement to the foot of the hill.
